Frequently asked questions
Quick answers about how we work, our fees, switching and tax deadlines.
Getting started
How does online accounting work?
You work with a qualified accountant by phone, video, email and chat, and share your records through our secure client portal and cloud accounting software. There's no need to visit an office — everything is handled online, across the UK.
Who will look after my accounts?
A dedicated, qualified accountant from our team, with experience in larger firms. You'll always know who to contact.
How quickly can you start?
Usually within a few days. If you have a deadline coming up, tell us when you sign up and we'll prioritise it.
What do I need to get started?
Your contact details, your UTR or company number, and photo ID for the identity checks we're required to do by law. We'll guide you through the rest.
Fees
Are your fees really fixed?
Yes. You pay a fixed monthly fee for the services in your package, agreed before we start. If you need something extra, we'll quote it first — no surprise bills.
Can I change or cancel my package?
Yes. You can upgrade, downgrade or add services as your business changes. See your engagement letter for the notice period.
Do you charge for phone calls and emails?
No. Questions about your accounts and tax are included in your monthly fee.
Switching
How do I switch from my current accountant?
We handle it for you: we contact your previous accountant for professional clearance and your records, and get authorised with HMRC. See our switching guide.
Can I switch in the middle of the year?
Yes, at any time. We check your upcoming deadlines first so nothing is missed.
Tax and deadlines
When is my Self Assessment tax return due?
The online return and any tax owed are due by 31 January after the end of the tax year (which runs 6 April to 5 April). Second payments on account are due by 31 July.
Do I need to use Making Tax Digital?
Sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000 have had to use MTD for Income Tax since April 2026. The threshold falls to £30,000 from April 2027 and £20,000 from April 2028. VAT-registered businesses already use MTD for VAT.
Should I be a sole trader or a limited company?
It depends on your profits, plans and how you want to pay yourself. Try our sole trader vs limited company calculator, then book a free call for advice on your situation.
When do I need to register for VAT?
When your taxable turnover goes over £90,000 in any 12-month period, or if you expect it to in the next 30 days. You can also register voluntarily.
Security
Is my data safe?
Yes. Your information is held in secure systems, access is restricted to the people working on your account, and we follow UK data protection law. See our privacy policy.
Which software do you work with?
We work with the main cloud accounting software. If you're not using any yet, we'll recommend what suits your business and set it up.
