Self Assessment tax return checklist

Everything to gather before you or your accountant complete your Self Assessment tax return.

Use this checklist to gather what's needed for your Self Assessment tax return. The deadline for online returns, and for paying the tax due, is 31 January after the end of the tax year (which runs 6 April to 5 April).

Your details

  • Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR)
  • National Insurance number
  • Your Government Gateway login, if you file yourself
  • Any changes to your address or personal circumstances

Employment income

  • P60 from each employer (or P45 if you left a job)
  • P11D or payslips showing benefits in kind, such as a company car
  • Details of any expenses your employer didn't repay

Self-employment income

  • Total sales or takings for the year
  • Business expenses, with receipts or bank records
  • Mileage records if you use your own vehicle for business
  • Any equipment you bought for the business

Property income

  • Rent received for each property
  • Letting agent statements
  • Repairs, insurance, agent fees and other costs
  • Mortgage interest statements

Savings, investments and dividends

  • Bank and building society interest statements
  • Dividend vouchers
  • Details of shares or other assets you sold, with what you paid and received

Pensions and Gift Aid

  • Personal pension contributions you paid yourself
  • Gift Aid donations to charity
  • State Pension and any other pension income

Other

  • Student loan plan type
  • Child Benefit received, if your income is over £60,000
  • Payments on account you've already made for the year
