Making Tax Digital: next quarterly update due 7 November 2026
Sole traders and landlords with income over £50,000 must send their second MTD quarterly update by 7 November 2026.
Making Tax Digital for Income Tax started on 6 April 2026 for sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000. More than 436,000 people have already signed up.
Quarterly deadlines for 2026/27
- 7 August 2026
- 7 November 2026
- 7 February 2027
- 7 May 2027
After the year ends you still send a final return by 31 January 2028.
Penalties
- For 2026/27, HMRC will not give penalty points for late quarterly updates
- Late Self Assessment returns and late payments can still be penalised
- From the second year, each missed quarterly deadline gives one penalty point, and reaching 4 points means a £200 penalty
Coming next
The threshold drops to £30,000 from April 2027 and £20,000 from April 2028.
