Making Tax Digital for Income Tax: are you ready?

MTD for Income Tax has started for sole traders and landlords with income over £50,000 — and the threshold is falling.

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax changes how sole traders and landlords report their income to HMRC.

Who it applies to

  • From 6 April 2026: qualifying income over £50,000 (based on your 2024 to 2025 tax return)
  • From 6 April 2027: qualifying income over £30,000
  • From 6 April 2028: qualifying income over £20,000

Qualifying income is your total income from self-employment and property, before expenses.

What you need to do

You'll need compatible software to keep digital records and send quarterly updates to HMRC, as well as a final return at the end of the year. Quarterly updates are due on 7 August, 7 November, 7 February and 7 May.

We can set up the software, keep your records and send every update for you. Use our tax deadlines calendar to see all your dates.
